What happens when your MediSave reaches the BHS cap? (Why HDB buyers care)
Once your MediSave Account reaches your Basic Healthcare Sum, new MediSave contributions above the cap are redirected (CPF MediSave overflow rules):
- Below age 55: Overflow goes to your Special Account (SA) until your SA reaches the Full Retirement Sum (FRS). If your SA has already reached the FRS through top-ups and interest, the overflow goes into your Ordinary Account (OA) — where it can be used to pay your HDB BTO or resale downpayment and monthly mortgage instalments.
- Age 55 and above: Overflow goes to your Retirement Account (RA) up to your cohort Full Retirement Sum. Once your RA reaches the FRS, the overflow goes into your Ordinary Account (OA).

Common questions
What is the CPF MediSave limit (Basic Healthcare Sum)?
In 2026, the prevailing Basic Healthcare Sum (BHS) is $79,000 for members below 65 and those turning 65 that year. For members who turned 65 in 2026 (born in 1961), $79,000 is their permanent BHS for life. MOH and CPF publish the 2027 adjustment for members under 65 ahead of 1 January 2027.
Can MediSave overflow be used to pay my HDB mortgage?
Not directly from MediSave, but once your MediSave hits the BHS cap and your Special Account (or Retirement Account if 55+) has reached the Full Retirement Sum, subsequent MediSave contributions overflow into your CPF Ordinary Account (OA), which can be used for HDB downpayments and monthly housing instalments.
Does my BHS keep rising after I turn 65?
No. Your BHS is locked in the calendar year you turn 65 and remains fixed for the rest of your life.
